Workout on Holiday? Yes or No.
When you are starting to exercise again after the menopause, should you workout on your holidays? The answer is of course it depends. Below are 3 questions to ask yourself about working out on your holidays?
Do you have a time sensitive exercise deadline?
If you are training for an event which has a hard deadline, you may decide to maintain your current level of exercise intensity and volume. You may find a local gym or your hotel has basic equipment. If you are creative in your workout. You can find a way to maintain your fitness and strength levels over the course of your holiday.
Do you have an active holiday planned?
If you are planning an active holiday, working out on top of that may be too much volume. City breaks are notorious for their high step count. Going out for a morning run, then walking 20,000 steps throughout the day, may not be ideal if you do not usually walk that many steps. Some older historic cities are built on hills and there may be many, many stairs to climb as well. Which if you are not used to the volume, it can cause niggles at the least.
Do you know how your body feels when deeply rested?
Observing what happens to your body when you allow yourself to rest and to eat differently. On holiday you may have a different schedule to being at home and working. If you have a different sleep pattern, be active rather than exercise at intensity. Be surrounded by novelty rather than your usual routes. Eat differently and at different times. It can often be a surprise to notice that niggles disappear on holiday, and sometimes you can lose weight.
I would recommend that your review every holiday and decide taking a holistic approach of what your goals are, they type of holiday it is as well as how rested you currently feel.
