I read a post saying exercising for 3 hours a week is 1.8% of your time. While this is true, there is a big difference in how much time and mental energy it takes if you are new to exercising again in your fifties or you are in an established exercise routine.

How much time do you spend on pre and post workout activities?

There are practicalities such as:

  •  Travelling to your gym, getting changed and organised for your session or class
  • If community is a part of your exercise vibe. Then making time to chat maybe part of your exercise routine
  • Washing and packing you gym bag

There is also the Mental Energy of:

  • Deciding what to do, if your energy levels fluctuate you may be deciding on the day what you are doing rather than following a weekly plan
  • Planning food. With increased intensity what food you eat and when becomes more important.
  • Booking into classes in advance

The more experienced exerciser you become, the fewer decisions you make on a day to day basis. This is because you know how your body responds to exercise. You have a routine on autopilot. You enjoy what you do.

When you are starting to exercise again in your fifties, it can seem overwhelming with all the things you feel you need to do. Making decisions can help to reduce that.

  • How long does it take you to exercise 3 hours a week?
  • How much time to do you spend thinking about how to to exercise 3 hours a week?
